Types of Vibration Dampers for Overhead Conductors
The main types of vibration dampers used on overhead lines are the Stockbridge damper (a tuned mass weight on a messenger for larger conductors and higher vibration energy), the spiral vibration damper (a lightweight clip-on spiral for light cables like ADSS, OPGW, and small conductors), and the spacer-damper (for bundled conductors, holding sub-conductor spacing while damping vibration). Related conductor-protection hardware includes armor rods and armor-grip suspension, which reinforce the conductor at the support. The type is chosen by the conductor and the vibration exposure.
Wind causes aeolian vibration that fatigues overhead conductors and fittings over time, so most exposed lines use dampers to control it. But there are several types, each suited to a different cable. This guide explains the main types of vibration dampers and how to choose.
Why Dampers Are Needed
Steady wind makes conductors vibrate at high frequency and small amplitude aeolian vibration which, over millions of cycles, fatigues the conductor strands and fittings, especially at the supports. A vibration damper absorbs or disrupts that oscillation so the fatigue never accumulates. (See our what-is-aeolian-vibration guide.) The right damper depends on the cable and how much vibration energy it faces.
1. Stockbridge Damper (Tuned Mass)
The Stockbridge vibration damper is the classic tuned-mass damper: two weights on the ends of a short flexible messenger cable, clamped to the conductor. When the conductor vibrates, the weights vibrate too tuned to move out of phase and absorb the vibration energy, dissipating it as the messenger flexes.
Because a tuned mass can absorb substantial energy, the Stockbridge damper suits larger transmission conductors and higher vibration energy long, high-tension spans in exposed terrain. The weights and messenger are tuned to the conductor and the expected frequencies. It’s the standard damper for heavier conductors.
2. Spiral Vibration Damper (Impact/Detuning)
The spiral vibration damper is a lightweight molded (usually UV-stable plastic) spiral that clips onto the cable and damps vibration by detuning and impacting the oscillation. It’s light, economical, and tool-free.
It suits light cables, ADSS, OPGW, and small conductors where a heavy tuned mass isn’t needed and would overload the cable. For ADSS especially, the light, dielectric-friendly spiral damper is the standard choice. (See our spiral-vs-Stockbridge guide.)
3. Spacer-Damper (for Bundled Conductors)
The spacer-damper is used on bundled conductors (multiple sub-conductors per phase). It does two jobs at once: it holds the sub-conductors at the correct spacing (like a spacer) and damps vibration and sub-span oscillation (like a damper), using flexible or elastomer elements. On most bundled transmission lines, the spacer-damper is the standard fitting because it solves spacing and vibration together. A plain bolted cable spacer maintains spacing without damping. (See our bundled-conductors guide.)
Related: Conductor Reinforcement at the Support
Dampers reduce the vibration energy; two other fittings reinforce the conductor where fatigue concentrates (at the supports):
- Armor rods preformed rods wrapped at the suspension clamp, spreading the load and stiffening the conductor against fatigue.
- Armor-grip suspension an elastomer-cushioned suspension unit for severe vibration duty.
These work with dampers, not instead of them the damper reduces the vibration, the armor rods protect the conductor at the clamp.
Types of Vibration Dampers at a Glance
| Type | Mechanism | Best for |
|---|---|---|
| Stockbridge | Tuned mass (weights + messenger) | Larger conductors, high energy |
| Spiral | Lightweight detune/impact | ADSS, OPGW, small conductors |
| Spacer-damper | Spacing + damping | Bundled conductors |
| Armor rods (reinforcement) | Stiffen at support | Fatigue protection at clamps |
How to Choose the Damper Type
- Larger transmission conductor → Stockbridge.
- ADSS / OPGW / small conductor → spiral.
- Bundled conductor → spacer-damper.
- Vibration fatigue at supports → add armor rods (or armor-grip suspension for severe duty).

Types of Vibration Dampers: FAQ
What are the main types of vibration dampers? The main types are the Stockbridge damper (tuned mass, for larger conductors), the spiral vibration damper (lightweight, for light cables like ADSS/OPGW), and the spacer-damper (for bundled conductors, combining spacing and damping). Armor rods and armor-grip suspension reinforce the conductor at supports.
What is a Stockbridge damper? A Stockbridge damper is a tuned-mass device two weights on a short messenger cable clamped to the conductor. The weights vibrate out of phase with the conductor to absorb vibration energy. It suits larger conductors and higher vibration energy on transmission lines.
What is a spiral vibration damper used for? A spiral vibration damper is a lightweight clip-on spiral for light cables ADSS, OPGW, and small conductors that damps aeolian vibration economically and without tools. It’s the standard choice for ADSS, where a heavy tuned mass isn’t needed.
What damper is used for bundled conductors? A spacer-damper, which holds the sub-conductors of a bundle at the correct spacing while also damping vibration and sub-span oscillation. It combines the spacer and damper jobs in one fitting, standard on bundled transmission lines.
Do armor rods count as vibration dampers? Armor rods don’t reduce the vibration energy the way dampers do they reinforce the conductor at the support, spreading the clamp load and resisting fatigue where it concentrates. They’re used together with dampers on lines with a vibration problem.
How do I choose a vibration damper? By the conductor: Stockbridge for larger conductors, spiral for light cables/ADSS, spacer-damper for bundles. Add armor rods for support reinforcement. Quantity and placement depend on span, tension, conductor, and terrain an engineering calculation your supplier can advise on.
The Bottom Line
The main types of vibration dampers are the Stockbridge (tuned mass, larger conductors), the spiral (lightweight, light cables/ADSS), and the spacer-damper (bundled conductors) supported by armor rods and armor-grip suspension that reinforce the conductor at supports. Choose the type by the conductor and the exposure, and size the quantity by the span.
