Description
Why a Helical Grip Beats a Bolted One
A bolted fitting grips a conductor at one short point, with pressure from a keeper and a bolt. It works, but it concentrates load and wear at that single spot, and over years of vibration, that’s where the conductor fatigues.
A preformed line fitting works differently. It’s a set of helical rods formed from wire, pre-shaped to spiral around the conductor or strand that wrap along a length of the cable and grip through their form. Instead of pinching at a point, the preformed fitting distributes its hold over many centimeters, reinforces the conductor exactly where it needs it, and develops the cable’s strength without a single stress concentration.
That one idea grip over length, not at a point is what unites the whole preformed family, and it’s why utilities specify these fittings where a bolted equivalent would slowly wear the conductor out. This page explains the principle and sorts the family so you can find the fitting your line needs.
The Preformed Principle: Three Things It Does Better
Every preformed fitting, whatever its job, delivers the same three advantages:
- Distributed grip. The helical rods hold along a length of conductor, so load and wear spread out instead of concentrating. No point loading, no fretting at a clamp mouth.
- Conductor protection. The rods cushion and reinforce the conductor where they wrap taking the abrasion and the bending stress the conductor would otherwise take alone.
- Full-strength, tool-free installation. A preformed fitting develops the conductor’s or strand’s rated strength through its grip length, and it installs by hand wrapped on, no bolts to torque, no special tools which on thousands of installations means fewer ways to get it wrong.
Which Preformed Fitting Do You Need?
The family, sorted by job:
| Preformed fitting | What it does | Use for |
|---|---|---|
| Guy grips | Helical grip that terminates a guy/stay strand | Guy and stay anchoring |
| Dead end grips | Preformed dead-end terminating a conductor at full strength | Conductor dead-ends |
| Distribution grips | Dead-end grip for distribution conductors | Distribution line terminations |
| Preformed tension clamps | Helical tension termination for OPGW/conductor | Tension structures, OPGW |
| Armor rods | Helical rods reinforcing the conductor at a support | Protecting conductor at suspension points |
| Armor grip suspension | Cushioned preformed suspension assembly | Tangent support, ADSS and severe-duty |
| Strand splices | Preformed splice joining strand at full strength | Joining guy strand |
Tell us the job terminate a guy, dead-end a conductor, protect a suspension point, splice a strand and we’ll point you to the fitting; the sections below explain the main ones.
Guys and Dead-Ends: Terminating Under Full Tension
The most common preformed jobs are terminations, where the fitting must develop the full strength of what it grips:
- Guy grips terminate a guy strand at the anchor or the pole wrapping the strand to develop its strength and connecting to the anchor or structure. Paired with guy clamps and guy hooks in the stay assembly.
- Dead end grips and distribution grips terminate a conductor at a dead-end structure, developing its rated strength over the grip length with no bolts and no point load the preformed alternative to a bolted tension clamp.
- Preformed tension clamps do the same for OPGW and where a vibration-friendly full-strength termination is wanted.
For the full dead-end decision preformed vs bolted vs compression see the strain clamp category.
Protecting and Splicing: Armor Rods and Strand Splices
Two more preformed jobs protect and join rather than terminate:
- Armor rods wrap the conductor at a suspension clamp, reinforcing it and taking the abrasion and bending stress at the support extending conductor life at the point it fatigues first. Where the whole support is cushioned, the armor grip suspension assembly combines armor rods with an elastomer insert.
- Strand splices join two lengths of guy strand at full strength, wrapped on with no fittings the preformed way to make a strand continuous.
Why Buyers Choose DAPENG Preformed Line Fittings
- The helical family, matched to your cable. Grips, dead-ends, armor rods, and splices sized precisely to your conductor or strand a preformed fitting for a neighboring size is a wrong part, so each is matched to your cable at RFQ.
- Full-strength grips, verified. Preformed terminations develop the rated strength of what they grip, batch-tested with reports supplied.
- Corrosion-matched to the line. Formed from wire specified for outdoor service and matched to the conductor’s metallurgy aluminum-clad for aluminum conductors, galvanized for steel strand.
- Tool-free, error-resistant installation. Wrapped on by hand the installation correctness the preformed design builds in, valuable across thousands of field installs.
- The whole assembly from one source. Preformed fittings with the guy, conductor, and anchor hardware they work with matched and kitted.
Use-Case Deep Dive
Preformed or bolted which should I use?
By the duty. Preformed wins where you want full conductor strength developed without point loading, better vibration behavior, and tool-free install OPGW, guy terminations, conductor dead-ends, and suspension-point protection. Bolted (tension and strain clamps) wins where inspect ability and re-tensioning matter, on bare distribution and sub-transmission conductors. Many lines use both send the conductor and duty and we’ll route you, since we make both families.
How do preformed fittings install without tools?
The rods are pre-formed to the exact lay and diameter of your cable, so a lineman simply wraps them on by hand, following the cable’s own spiral the fitting’s form does the gripping. No torque wrench, no bolts, no compression tool. Because the correctness lives in the manufactured form rather than in field technique, a properly matched preformed fitting is hard to install wrong which is exactly why they’re favored for high-volume guy and dead-end work. The one rule that matters: the fitting must match the cable size exactly, which is why we confirm it at RFQ.
Can preformed fittings be reused?
Generally no a preformed fitting is formed to grip once, and removing it work-hardens and distorts the rods; reapplying a used fitting is not good practice. This is the trade-off against a bolted clamp, which can be slackened and re-tensioned. Where re-openability matters, bolted; where a permanent full-strength termination is the goal, preformed. Order the correct quantity plus a sensible allowance rather than planning to reuse.
Straight Answers to Common Buyer Concerns
“How do I know the preformed fitting matches my cable?” By specifying the cable exactly a preformed fitting is size-specific, formed to your conductor or strand’s diameter and lay, so a fitting for a different size won’t grip correctly. Send the cable datasheet (diameter, construction, strand type) and each fitting is confirmed against it before production. This is the one specification that can’t be approximated with preformed products, and we confirm it in writing.
“Are these as strong as a bolted termination?” A preformed dead-end or tension grip develops the conductor’s rated strength over its grip length that’s the design intent, and it’s batch-tested and documented. On the vibration side, the distributed grip is gentler on the conductor than a bolted point. The bolted fitting’s advantage is re-openability, not strength; for a permanent termination, preformed is a full-strength solution.
“Can you supply the complete guy or dead-end assembly?” Yes the preformed grip is one part of it. Send the assembly and we quote the grip with the guy wire, anchor, eye nut, and structure hardware, matched and kitted per assembly.
