Stay Insulators

Stay insulators the insulator placed in a guy/stay wire that isolates the lower section electrically, so a line fault or broken conductor can’t make the whole stay live down to where someone can touch it. Strain-rated to carry the guy’s full tension, matched to your stay hardware.

Description

The Insulator That Keeps a Guy Wire Safe to Touch

A guy (Stay Insulators) wire runs from near the top of a pole down to an anchor in the ground, often passing close to energized conductors on the way. That creates a hazard most people never think about: if a conductor breaks and falls onto the stay, or a fault energizes it, the whole guy wire can become live all the way down to ground level, where a person, an animal, or a vehicle can contact it. A guy wire is a metal cable a child can reach.

The stay insulator removes that hazard. Placed in the guy wire, it breaks the wire electrically into two sections so even if the upper part becomes energized, the lower section, the part within reach, stays isolated and safe to touch. It does this while carrying the guy’s full mechanical tension, because the stay still has to do its structural job.

It’s a small porcelain component doing a genuine safety job, and this page covers it: what it does, where it goes in the stay, and how it’s rated.

The Two Jobs a Stay Insulator Does at Once

A stay insulator has to satisfy two requirements simultaneously, and both matter:

  • Electrical isolation: It insulates the lower section of the guy from the upper, so a fault or contact on the upper part doesn’t energize the part within reach of the ground. This is the safety function and it’s why stay insulators are required by most standards on guys that run near energized conductors.
  • Mechanical strength (strain rating): The guy’s full tension passes through the insulator it’s in the load path so the insulator must carry that tension without failing. A stay insulator is a strain-rated insulator, not a support type; its failing load must exceed the guy’s working tension with your standard’s margin.

Both together: it isolates and holds. An insulator that isolates but can’t take the tension is useless in a stay; one that holds but isn’t rated for the isolation defeats the safety purpose.

Where the Stay Insulator Goes and Why Height Matters

Placement is part of the safety function. The stay insulator is positioned in the guy so that the lower section it isolates is the part within reach from the ground typically the insulator is set high enough that a person at ground level, on a vehicle, or an animal cannot contact any part of the guy that could become energized. Your standard specifies the minimum height and the placement; get it too low and the isolated section doesn’t cover the reachable zone.

On a stay assembly, the insulator sits in the wire between the pole attachment and the anchor, with guy grips or guy clamps terminating the wire on each side of it. We supply the insulator with the stay hardware so the assembly is complete and correctly configured.

Why Buyers Choose DAPENG Stay Insulators

  • Strain-rated for your guy: The failing load matched above your guy’s working tension with your margin, so the insulator holds the stay while it isolates it.
  • Robust porcelain, made to isolate: Porcelain (or your specified material) formed for the stay’s dual duty mechanical strength and reliable isolation in weather.
  • Configured for the stay assembly: Made to sit in the guy between the grips and clamps, in the egg/reel or equivalent form your assembly uses.
  • To your standard: Isolation and mechanical class to your utility’s specification, with documentation.
  • The whole stay from one source: Stay insulators with the guy wire, grips, clamps, anchor rods, and anchors matched and kitted.

Use-Case Deep Dive

Why does a guy wire need an insulator at all?

Because a bare guy is a continuous metal cable from near the conductors down to the ground, and if it becomes energized a fallen conductor, a fault, induction the whole thing is live where people can touch it. The stay insulator breaks that path, isolating the reachable lower section so it stays safe even when the upper part is energized. On guys near energized conductors, most safety standards require it. It’s not an optional refinement; it’s a shock-hazard control on a cable the public can reach.

Stay insulator or guy strain insulator same thing?

Very closely related both are strain-rated insulators placed in a guy to isolate it, and in many markets the terms are used interchangeably (“stay” is common in Commonwealth/African/South-Asian usage, “guy strain” in North American). See our guy strain insulators for the closely-matched product.

How do I size the stay insulator to my guy?

By the guy’s working tension the insulator’s failing load must exceed it with your standard’s margin, because the full stay tension passes through the insulator. And by the isolation class your standard requires for the voltage the guy runs near. Send the guy size and tension, and the voltage environment, and we confirm both the mechanical and isolation ratings on datasheet figures, not estimates.

Specifications and What They Mean for You

Specification What we supply What it means for the buyer
Function Electrical isolation of the guy Lower stay section safe to touch under fault
Failing load Above your guy’s tension Holds the stay’s full load; never the weak point
Isolation class To your voltage environment Reliable isolation where the guy runs near line
Material Porcelain / specified Robust dual-duty in weather
Form Egg / reel / your interface Sits correctly in the stay between grips
Standard To your spec Passes your safety specification review

Straight Answers to Common Buyer Concerns

“Do we really need stay insulators on every guy?” Where the guy runs near energized conductors, most standards require them because without one, a fault can make the whole stay live to ground level, a real shock hazard on a cable within public reach. On guys well clear of conductors, your standard may not require one. The rule is the standard’s, and the hazard is genuine; tell us the configuration and we’ll confirm the requirement. This is a safety spec, not an upsell we’d rather you fit the right insulator than skip it.

“How do we know it will hold the stay’s tension?” Match the insulator’s failing load to your guy’s working tension with your standard’s margin the full stay load passes through the insulator, so it’s strain-rated for exactly this, batch-tested with documentation. Send the guy tension and we confirm the rating; it’s never meant to be the weak point in the stay.

“Can you supply the whole insulated stay?” Yes the stay insulator with the guy wire, grips, clamps, anchor rod, and anchor, matched and kitted, so the stay is complete and correctly configured with the insulator at the right height.

After You Order

Rating and configuration confirmation before production, test documentation with shipment, insulators kitted with the stay hardware, and an engineering contact who answers precisely because a stay insulator is a safety component that also carries the stay’s full load, and getting both the isolation and the strength right is what keeps the guy safe and standing.

Specifications

Stay Insulators are classified according to system voltage, mainly 11kV stay insulator and 33kV stay insulator.
The 11kV stay insulator is widely used in 11kV overhead line networks of power distribution systems.
DAPENG Power stay insulators are designed to connect stay wire or guy wire securely and reliably.

DAPENG Power stay insulators are manufactured from high-quality glazed porcelain, in compliance with BS137 standards, and are suitable for outdoor operation under harsh environmental conditions.
