U Bolts

Hot-dip galvanized U bolts for pole line and overhead line hardware U-shaped, threaded both ends, clamping round or square members to mount fittings, brackets, and hardware to poles and crossarms. Sized to the member they wrap, and supplied with the nuts and washers that complete them.

Description

The Fastener That Wraps a Member Instead of Passing Through It

Most bolts go through something. A U-bolt goes around it. Its U-shape wraps a round pole, a round or square crossarm, a pipe, or a channel, with both legs threaded so a pair of nuts pulls a backing plate or fitting tight against the member clamping onto it without needing a hole drilled through it.

That single capability makes the U-bolt one of the quiet essentials of pole-line construction. Where a fitting has to be mounted to a member you can’t or shouldn’t drill a concrete pole, a steel section, a member the standard says to clamp rather than penetrate the U-bolt is how it’s done.

This page covers U-bolts for line hardware: sizing them to the member they wrap, the round-versus-square distinction that decides which you need, and where they fit in pole and crossarm work.

Sizing a U-Bolt: It’s About the Member, Not Just the Bolt

A U-bolt has two dimensions that matter, and the first one catches people out:

  • The opening (the gap between the legs, and the bend radius) must match the member it wraps its diameter if round, its width if square. Too small and it won’t go around; too large and it can’t be pulled tight enough to grip. This is the dimension buyers most often get wrong, because they think about the bolt’s thread size and forget the member.
  • The thread diameter and length must suit the load and give the nut its proper projection through the backing plate or fitting.

So the first question isn’t “what size bolt” it’s “what does it wrap?” A round member needs a round-bend U-bolt matched to its diameter; a square member needs a square-bend U-bolt matched to its width, so the U seats flat on the flats rather than gripping on corners. Tell us the member (round or square, and its dimension) and the fitting being mounted, and the U-bolt is sized to both.

Why Buyers Choose DAPENG U Bolts

  • Hot-dip galvanized for outdoor pole-line life: Galvanized to ISO 1461 / ASTM A153 class coatings, threads cleared and nuts run before packing so they thread freely on site the galvanizing on the bolt matched to the galvanizing on the hardware it mounts.
  • Sized to the member, round or square: Openings and bends matched to the pole, crossarm, pipe, or channel they wrap the sizing detail that decides whether the U-bolt grips or rattles.
  • Formed, not cut, at the bend: The U is bent from continuous bar so the legs carry load through unbroken metal a U-bolt that cracks at the bend under tightening is a U-bolt made wrong.
  • Supplied complete: Kitted with the hex nuts, square washers, and backing plates the assembly needs, so a crew isn’t chasing nuts at the pole.
  • Volume for the build: A pole-line project consumes U-bolts by the thousand; cartons counted and marked by size, batched to your programmer.

Use-Case Deep Dive

What is a U-bolt used for on a pole line?

Mounting hardware to a member without drilling through it. Common applications: fixing fittings and brackets to poles (where the U-bolt wraps the pole and a backing plate secures the fitting); clamping crossarms, braces, and channel; mounting pole-top and equipment brackets; and securing pipe and conduit runs. It’s the answer wherever a connection must clamp around a member rather than bolt through it essential on concrete poles, which most standards prohibit drilling, and useful on steel and timber where a wrap-clamp beats a hole. For a complete pole-mounting clamp assembly rather than a bare U-bolt, see the pole band and pole line hardware range we’ll route you to the assembly if that’s what the job needs.

Round bend or square bend which do I need?

Match the bend to the member’s shape. A round member (a pole, a round crossarm, a pipe) takes a round-bend U-bolt sized to its diameter, so the U seats against the curve. A square or rectangular member (steel angle, box section, some crossarms) takes a square-bend U-bolt sized to its width, so the U seats flat on the faces instead of bearing on two corners a square-bend U-bolt on a square member grips properly; a round-bend one on the same member touches only the corners and works loose. Tell us the member shape and dimension and we supply the right bend.

Can a U-bolt mount a fitting to a concrete pole?

Yes and it’s one of the most valuable U-bolt applications, because most utility standards prohibit drilling concrete poles (a hole risks the reinforcement and the pole’s warranty). The U-bolt wraps the pole and a backing plate secures the fitting, mounting hardware with no penetration at all. The catalog’s U-bolt-type pole clamps are built for exactly this sized for concrete poles (and iron poles) with the appropriate bolt sizes. For heavier or fixed-diameter mounting, stainless banding and pole bands are the alternatives; which suits depends on the pole and the load, and we’ll advise from the detail.

Straight Answers to Common Buyer Concerns

“There are U-bolts everywhere and they’re cheap. Why source from a line-hardware factory?” Because a pole-line U-bolt is not an exhaust-pipe U-bolt: it needs the galvanizing to match a fitting that lives outdoors for decades, the bend formed so it won’t crack under a lineman’s torque, and the opening sized to the member it actually wraps. A generic U-bolt from a general merchant may be none of those. All three are checkable coating class with a gauge, the bend by inspection, the fit against your member and all three are why utility work specifies proper line-hardware U-bolts.

“Can you match an unusual member size or a legacy pole?” Send the member dimension (and whether it’s round or square) or a sample. U-bolts are made to the member as routine OEM work opening, bend, thread, and length to your detail, with confirmation before production. A legacy pole or an odd section gets the U-bolt that fits it, not the nearest stock size that almost does.

“We need the whole pole-mounting assembly, not just the bolt.” Then tell us and we’ll quote the pole clamp / pole band assembly rather than a bare U-bolt, because mounting a fitting to a pole reliably usually needs the backing plate, the right bolts, and sometimes banding, as a set. Selling you a loose U-bolt for a job that needs the assembly helps nobody; send the mounting detail and we specify the complete solution.

Send the member the U-bolt will wrap round or square, and its dimension the fitting being mounted, and your quantities. Our team returns U-bolts sized to the member with the right bend, in the coating your project needs, kitted with nuts and washers (or as a complete pole-mounting assembly if that’s the better fit), typically within one working day.

After You Order

Size and bend confirmation before production, material certificates with shipment, threads run and cleared, cartons marked by size and kitted with their nuts and washers where requested, and an engineering contact who answers quickly because U-bolts are a volume consumable, and a supply question on the small parts shouldn’t hold up the hardware they mount.
