Guy Grip

Guy grips preformed helical rods that terminate a guy or stay strand at full strength, wrapping the strand into a formed loop with a thimble for the anchor or pole. Sized to your exact strand, tool-free to install the preformed way to dead-end a guy.

Description

Terminating the Guy at Full Strength, the Preformed Way

A guy strand holds a pole against the pull of the line, so where it terminates at the anchor below and the pole above the connection has to hold the strand’s full tension. A guy grip does it the preformed way: a set of helical rods, formed to your strand’s exact size, that wrap along the strand and terminate in a formed loop with a thimble, connecting to the anchor or pole hardware. Full strength, no bolts, no point load; the guy’s termination is as strong as the strand.

It’s the preformed counterpart to a bolted guy clamp, and the strand-side sibling of the conductor dead end grip. This page covers guy grips: how the preformed strand dead-end works, how it differs from splicing and from conductor dead-ends, and why the strand match is everything.

The Preformed Guy Dead-End Advantage

A guy grip terminates the strand the way every preformed fitting grips:

  • Full strength over length: The helical rods develop the strand’s rated strength along the grip length, so the termination holds the guy’s full tension without slipping or crushing the strand.
  • No point load: Distributed grip means no concentrated clamping stress on the strand.
  • Thimble to the hardware: The grip forms a loop around a thimble that protects the strand at the connection and takes the shackle or bolt to the anchor/pole grip and connection in one fitting.
  • Tool-free: Formed to the strand’s lay and diameter, the rods wrap on by hand no bolts to torque, no tools.

Like all preformed fittings, a guy grip is made for one strand size and generally isn’t reusable which is why the strand match matters (below).

Guy Grip, Strand Splice, or Dead-End Grip? Same Family, Different Jobs

The helical family includes several strand/conductor fittings that look similar worth being clear:

  • Guy grip (this page) terminates (dead-ends) one guy strand end at the anchor or pole.
  • Strand splices join two strand ends end-to-end (extend/repair a run).
  • Dead end grips terminate the line conductor (not strand) at a dead-end.

So: terminating a guy strand → guy grip; joining two strand lengths → strand splice; terminating the conductor → dead-end grip. Same principle, different member. Tell us the strand and the job and we’ll confirm.

Guy Grip or Bolted Guy Clamp?

The choice at a guy termination is preformed grip versus bolted clamp:

  • Preformed guy grip full strength over length, no point load, tool-free, gentle on the strand, single-use. Fast and consistent across many guys.
  • Bolted guy clamp bolted, re-openable, re-tension able, reusable at the cost of a point-load grip and more install effort.

Choose the preformed grip for a fast, permanent, strand-friendly guy dead-end; the bolted clamp where re-openability or re-tensioning is wanted. We make both and advise by your practice.

The Critical Spec: The Strand Match

A guy grip is formed to one strand size the rods are pre-shaped to a specific strand diameter and lay (and construction, e.g. 7-wire). The strand match is the spec that can’t be approximated:

  • A grip made for your exact strand grips cleanly and develops full strength.
  • A grip for a neighboring size won’t grip right it’s the wrong part.

Specifying a guy grip starts with the strand: its size (diameter/class), construction, and grade (e.g. galvanized guy strand class). Send the strand and each grip is matched before production the spec we confirm in writing.

Why Buyers Choose DAPENG Guy Grips

  • Matched to your exact strand: Formed to your strand’s diameter, construction, and lay confirmed at RFQ.
  • Full-strength, tested: Develops the strand’s rated strength over the grip length, batch-tested with documentation.
  • Thimble-protected connection: The formed loop takes a thimble that protects the strand and connects to the anchor/pole hardware.
  • Corrosion-matched, tool-free: Formed wire to the strand’s coating (galvanized for galvanized strand); wrapped on by hand, error-resistant.
  • The guy complete from one source; Guy grips with the guy wire, anchor hardware (anchor rod, ground anchor), and pole hardware (guy hook) matched and kitted.

Use-Case Deep Dive

Where does a guy grip go on the stay?

At both terminations of the guy: at the anchor end (the grip forms a loop that connects, via a thimble and shackle, to the anchor rod / ground anchor), and at the pole end (the grip connects to the guy hook or attachment). The grip dead-ends the strand at full strength at each end, so the guy holds the pole through connections as strong as the strand itself.

Guy grip or strand splice which do I need?

If you’re terminating the strand (ending it at an anchor or pole), it’s a guy grip (this page). If you’re joining two lengths of strand (extending a run that exceeds a reel, or repairing), it’s a strand splice. Terminate vs join same helical family, opposite jobs. Tell us which and we’ll supply the right one.

Can a guy grip be reused?

Generally no like all preformed fittings, it’s formed to grip once; removing it distorts the rods. Order the right quantity plus an allowance. If re-openability is required, a bolted guy clamp is the better choice. The single-use nature is the trade-off for the full-strength, tool-free, point-load-free termination.

Straight Answers to Common Buyer Concerns

“Will the guy grip hold the full guy tension?” Yes a preformed guy grip develops the strand’s full rated strength over its grip length, batch-tested and documented, so the termination holds the guy’s full working tension and isn’t a weak point. And because the grip is distributed over a length rather than clamped at a point, it’s gentler on the strand than a bolted clamp. Send the strand and we confirm the grip and its holding value.

“How do I match it to my strand?” Send the strand’s size (diameter/class), construction, and grade a guy grip is formed to one strand size, so we match it exactly and confirm in writing. A grip for a neighboring strand won’t grip correctly; the strand match is the one spec that can’t be approximated.

“Can you supply the whole guy assembly?” Yes the guy grips with the guy wire, the anchor hardware (anchor rod, ground anchor), and the pole hardware (guy hook), matched and kitted, so the stay is complete from anchor to pole.
