Why Are Hexagon Nuts And Bolts Hexagon?

Hex nuts and hex bolts are probably the most common types of fasteners, and they are everywhere.

The reason they are so popular is because the hexagonal shape of the head is very versatile, it can be grasped by tools from all angles, and even by hand if needed.

To better understand how the hexagonal shape increases the difficulty of turning bolts and nuts, consider this example: a square fastener has four sides. In order to tighten the square bolt or nut, you have to turn a quarter of the direction each time to reach the next parallel plane. On the other hand, hexagonal fasteners only need one-sixth of the turn to reach the next parallel each time. In other words, you must rotate a square fastener 90 degrees to "click" it into a parallel plane, while a hexagonal fastener only needs to rotate 30 degrees to reach the next parallel.

If a bolt or nut has more than six sides, it may break. Therefore, the hexagon has become the most important shape for manufacturing bolts and nuts.

Generally accepted

Although the main reason why bolts and nuts are hexagons is to make them easy to turn, hexagons have also become a generally accepted standard. Consumers and businesses all over the world are using hexagonal fasteners. If the fasteners have many different shapes, they will not be compatible with each other. This has prompted many manufacturers to focus exclusively on the manufacture of hexagonal bolts and nuts.

There are several shapes of bolts and nuts, but the most common shape is hexagon. The use of hexagons reduces the required turning distance and makes the fasteners easier to turn. To tighten a bolt or nut, you must turn it. Because of the sides of the hexagonal bolts and nuts, they only need to turn a radius of 30 degrees to reach the next flat parallel.
